Spelling for the Holiday

Spelling City is a great site to practise spelling words using some fabulous games and then take a test to see how your learning is progressing. Remember we talked about the ZPD and work on a list that is not too easy, not too hard but just right for your learning.  Click on the link or image below to access the NZ Essential Word lists, the Jolly Phonics Tricky Words and the lists from the Jolly Phonics Grammar Handbook 2.

Try this cool activity and learn something about symmetry while you are doing it.
I used two lines of symmetry and hexagons to create this awesome egg.

Helping Christchurch Girls Brigade

I am part of the 10th Waitakere Girls Brigade.  We wanted to help the 29th Christchurch Girls Brigade because their meeting place at Beckenham Baptist Church, was destroyed by the earthquake.
our group decided to put some money, things and small toys in a shoebox to send down to them in Christchurch.
The first week at my Girls Brigade, I gave all my pocket money.
The second week, I gave 10 cents.
One of my best friends, Rebecca, gave heaps of stuff.  She gave stickers, magnets and photo frames.
One of the older girls gave a pad of colourful paper.
We got $44 and some cents.  But I don't remember how much.  We also made a card and we took a photo of all of us to put on it.

Rachel's Home Learning

The first thing I did was ask my Mum if I'm allowed and then I got to wash the dishes. I got the wipe and the soap and started washing the dishes. It was so much fun doing the dishes!

Kaitlyn the Dancer

I danced in a show in front of lots of people.  I did three dances.  In one dance I was a puppet and a snowflake.  I danced ballet and jazz.  I really enjoyed this and my family was there to support me.

Aamirah's Dinosaur Park

Aamirah made an amazing Dinosaur Park with plasticine, clay and beads.  It was hard because the plasticine was hard and so it was difficult to make the shapes.

Yasir The Chef

I chose a cooking project because I want to learn how to cook food and prepare a meal for my family.  I felt excited when I cooked food.  I did cooking at my home kitchen.  It is a hard job because you may have a fire.  That's why I asked my Mum for help.  Everyone of my family liked my cooking.  Yum, yum!

Abigail at Pins

Abigail completed her first home learning challenge from the 'Physical Activity and Outdoors' section.  She made a slideshow and shared her experiences of Ten Pin bowling.  She included her scores and a certificate as part of her evidence.

Making Ten

Knowing how to make ten is an important step to solving more complex problems. For example, if you know that 3 + 7 = 10, you will have an easier time understanding that 30 + 70 = 100, or 43 + 7 = 50, and eventually 300 + 700 = 1000 and beyond.
Here are two games to help you learn the bonds that make 10.
Choose to make 10 in Maths Lines.

Yasir's First Home Learning Challenge

I have chosen to do this poster for my project because I like learning about different flags and I wanted to show you my favourite three flags.  They are New Zealand, Iraq and Jordan.  I like Jordan because it's where my Mum comes from.  I like the Iraq flag because it's where my Dad comes from.  Also, I like the New Zealand flag because that's where I was born.  I like living here.
Yasir made his poster, wrote his story and took photos to show us the poster making process.
